When I was a kid, I loved Valentine’s Day. I loved creating and decorating a card box for school. I loved picking out treats to give to my classmates and I loved having class parties.

Now, as an adult, I am amazed at how much focus is put on this holiday. There is so much pressure, and yet, people still wait until the last minute to go out and buy cards and presents for their loved ones. I am no exception.

Don’t these people realize that I hate having to fight through a crowd to find the perfect card to express my feelings?

Actually, I despise card shopping in general, but that’s beside the point.

When you really think about it, it all seems so trivial.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sappy romantic girl who loves those grand gestures of love and affection. I just feel like they would mean so much more on just an average, normal day. It will probably never happen, but I would personally much rather receive flowers for no reason whatsoever other than because my husband loves me.

If it sounds like I’m knocking Valentine’s Day; I’m not. I love that we have a day dedicated to telling those close to us that we love and appreciate them.  I love that we have a reminder at least once a year that life is too short to not let others know how we feel about them. I love being able to help my daughter pick out valentines cards for her classmates and watch her make her own card box for school. Plus, it gives all of us at HarborLight Credit Union a good excuse to hold a bake sale.

Who doesn’t love baked goods?

So if you are in need of a last minute Valentine’s Day gift for your loved one, or if you just have a sweet tooth, stop in to either branch on Valentine’s Day and check out our goodies. All proceeds from the bake sale will be donated to No More Sidelines.

If you’ve never heard of it, No More Sidelines is a fantastic non-profit organization dedicated to providing children and young adults with special needs the opportunity to play sports and participate in other events. For more info, visit nomoresidelines.org.
